I am a Lotha Naga tribal, living in a small town called Wokha in North East part of India. I had to travel to Shillong to study my BA as n my town there are not enough educational opportunities. Shillong is a small, but modern town and when I was there, I realized that in Wokha people were missing out a lot of things, including the basic facilities like power, water etc. At that time I decided to become a social worker and journalist. But again, the opportunities of joining an organisation in Wokha are very limited because all the good ones are in big cities. But through my work with IndiaUnheard I feel like I am doing something towards my goal, and I can do it while living here. We are seven siblings in my family and I am the only girl left at home, since my mother passed away two years ago. So it’s not easy for me to leave just like that.
My family is happy with the work that I do with making videos. So far I haven’t had trouble getting people to talk to me and give me interviews, which makes me more sure that I want to continue with journalism.

Well, even Korea was culturally invaded by Chinese, Japanese, European, American etc.. their culture didn’t even died. In fact Korean culture is hitting Chinese, Japanese and American culture.

You are mistaken, all you have to do is look at the American Indian culture. I mean the sioux, cherokee, navajo, etc..
We have literally destroyed there culture in America. Alot of native American tribes are now owners of major casinos.If the culture is to survive it is the responsibility of the parents and not the Government to keep it “Alive”
Couldn’t agree with you more! Most of our indigenous communities are small in number and have limited resources to document or preserve their history and culture. This is why they are very vulnerable against cultural invasion because total loss of their language and culture is a real threat for them. Consider this: In many places within Nagaland, children are learning Korean instead of their own tribal language. As there is no library, no books, years down the line where can they learn that language?
Yes, comparing a whole country with an indigenous group or minority is not quite the same thing…although, obviously nothing, and even culture, remains static–however the pace of change is even more rapid now than ever before…
I’m impressed, I have to say. Actually not often do I encounter a weblog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you’ve gotten hit the nail on the head. Your thought is excellent; the issue is something that not enough individuals are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy that I stumbled throughout this in my search for something regarding this.
While there has been an increasing tendency among the younger Naga generation (or even more aptly Enthusiasm to Ape)… What nobody is looking into is why this particular situation has even risen? I’m of the view that the youth finds a resonance with such a discourse. And by discourse, I’m referring to both popular culture and racial-cultural parallels. The Korean phenomena has filled the gap of a dominant discourse in the vacuum that existed–the Greater Mainstream Indian culture obviously has no appeal or resonance at least enough to want to ape. Most probably due to the equation with the Oppressive element. I don’t think its a cause for so much alarm and hysterical panic from the adults except in the case of not keeping or adhering our original tradition.
Why is there so much hysteria??? What is a Korean culture anyway… Both the Japanese and South Koreans were substantially Westernised by the Americans post-Cold War in keeping with the Containment Strategy of Soviet Union and the Americans wanted a foothold in the Asia- Pacific region… So, this phenomena isn’t new by the way… Most of the hysteria group seem to be hollering from the position that the Naga culture was pure and untainted by any outside influences… Have we forgotten the late 19th century and the early 20th century American Baptist missionary entries into our lands and literally and practically converting our very life styles… From Head-hunting to pious Church -goers, from animistic traditions to being followers of Jesus– Nobody is complaining about that… And I say this as a rebuttal to the point that our culture has to be protected!!! While I dont disagree with that–the truth is we are no longer isolated (even the Andamanese tribes that the Indian governemnt is so bent on protecting are either perishing or getting influenced by the Outside World)… Maybe the only way forward now is to make us part of the global discourse and ensure that we are better equipped so that we aren’t duped in the process…
And for the Nagas ourselves, Won’t the situation be on more reasonable grounds if individual families can inculcate pride in respective cultures or traditions. Instead of bridging the gap and attempting to understand the teenagers, why is there a perpetual labeling and demonising element here, YET AGAIN!!!! Then again, the man on the video spoke in particular about not wearing Naga costumes–How come nobody brings to notice the fact that the Church attire for Naga women are mostly ‘Mekhalas’, while Naga men opt for a Western pant and Shirt…. So much for preserving one’s culture huh!!!
