India’s patriarchal tradition informs all aspects of public and private life. Families traditionally give preference to sons in allocation of resources and access to education, resulting in gender inequity in public and professional spheres. This situation gives rise to a highly gendered public sphere, which is apparent across politics, economics and society. Individuals who identify as homosexual or transgender face discrimination, ostracism and even violence.
Gender inequity is a challenge at every level. As modern India races forward and adopts global gender norms, the majority of the country is still firmly rooted in patriarchy. Female infanticide, violence against gender minorities, and scarce opportunities are just a few results of this system.
