Education is a priority in India’s knowledge-based economy. The Right to Education Act, passed in 2005, seeks to achieve universal primary education for all children through level eight. In partnership with international and domestic organizations, the Indian government is working to achieve its Millennium Development educational goals by 2015. A full 93 percent of Indian children are now formerly enrolled in primary school.
However, disparities persist, including variations in access, quality and standardization of curriculum between the wealthy and poor classes and between urban and rural areas. Absenteeism among both teachers and students undermine the significance of government-reported enrollment rates. Many rural schools do not even have classrooms. Indeed, equal access to quality education is fundamental to unified economic growth.
