Ajit Singh
I am Oinam Ajit Singh. I belong to the Manipuri community of Assam, which is a minority population in the region. My community is facing lots of deprivation. There are no proper roads, no proper supply of electricity and no proper medical facilities. As a CC I would like to tell the world about the deprivation my community is facing, and help them to get their rights addressed. I joined Video Volunteers because I have been working in the mainstream media for several years, but I feel that my community is forgotten in the news, and that I can't write about them, because it does not interest mainstream audience. So, I joined community media, with the hope I could talk about right violations and corruption in my area. When my community comes to the frontline, it is in a very distorted light. For example, a few months back, three houses in my village got burgled. The next day a horde of media organisations came to the village and wrote long reports. Because of this, people in the state think that it is a village where people steal. The reality is different. In this very village, the only school is run on land that has been donated by the villagers. This sort of story is never covered.
